Why I Choose Genuine Leather: A Designer’s Perspective

One of the questions I hear most often is why I continue to design almost exclusively with genuine leather. The answer isn’t complicated. For me, leather has never been just a material. It’s part of the design itself. It influences how a bag feels, how it ages, how it carries weight, and how it becomes part of someone’s everyday life. Choosing leather has never been about following luxury traditions. It has always been about creating products that are made to last.

A Material That Gets Better with Time

One of the things I appreciate most about genuine leather is that it changes over time. Unlike many synthetic materials, leather develops character through everyday use. Small marks, natural softening, and the way it adapts to its owner become part of its story. No two leather bags will age in exactly the same way.

That individuality is something I truly value.

Quality You Can Feel

When designing a bag, appearance is only one part of the process. The way the material feels in your hands matters just as much.

Premium leathers such as full-grain leather, nappa leather, calfskin, and carefully selected Italian leathers offer a softness, flexibility, and richness that are difficult to recreate with synthetic materials. The experience is different from the very first touch.

A Long-Term Investment

I have always believed that fewer, better-made pieces are worth more than constantly replacing products that weren’t built to last. A well-crafted leather bag can be carried for many years. It doesn’t belong to one season. It doesn’t disappear when trends change. Instead, it becomes something familiar—something that naturally becomes part of your everyday routine. That is one of the reasons genuine leather has remained relevant for generations.

Craftsmanship

Another reason I continue working with leather is craftsmanship. Leather allows artisans to shape, construct, stitch, and finish every detail with precision. Many traditional techniques have been passed down for decades, and I believe they deserve to continue. Every handcrafted bag reflects the skill, patience, and experience of the people who made it.

That human element is something I never want to lose.

Every Material Has Its Purpose

This doesn’t mean that leather is the right choice for every product. Canvas, denim, recycled fabrics, and many innovative materials all have their place in modern design. Each material offers different possibilities, depending on the purpose of the product.

For me, however, when creating timeless handbags designed to last for years, genuine leather continues to offer the balance of beauty, durability, structure, and functionality that I look for as a designer.

Timeless Design Deserves Timeless Materials

At UniUkiyo, every bag begins with an idea. The material is what allows that idea to become reality. Because my goal has never been to create products for a single season, I choose materials that can support that vision for years to come. A timeless design deserves a timeless material.

That is why genuine leather continues to be my first choice.
